Why Flip an Image?

Flipping an image creates a mirror image of the original. It’s one of the most frequently needed quick edits, especially for:

  • Selfie mirroring — front-facing cameras capture a mirror image of your face. When you take a selfie, it looks natural to you but reversed to others. Flipping it horizontally shows your face as others actually see you.
  • Text in photos — if text appears backwards (e.g., in a reflection or mirror photo), flipping fixes it.
  • Symmetrical compositions — create perfectly symmetrical images by flipping and combining.
  • Watermarks and logos — flip a logo to create a mirrored variant.
  • Design layouts — mirror an element to achieve visual balance in a design.

How to Flip an Image Online (Step by Step)

Using the PPImage Flip Image Tool, you can mirror any image in one click — no software, no account.

Step 1 — Open the Flip Image Tool

Go to ppimage.com/flip-image. All processing happens in your browser — no upload to any server.

Step 2 — Upload your image

Drag and drop your image, or click to select a file. Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF.

Step 3 — Choose your flip direction

  • Flip Horizontal — mirrors left to right (like holding the image up to a mirror). This is the most common option — use it to fix selfie mirroring or reverse text.
  • Flip Vertical — mirrors top to bottom (turns the image upside down). Use for reflections, creative effects, or fixing an inverted image.

Flip Horizontal vs. Flip Vertical — When to Use Each

Use case Flip direction
Fix selfie mirroring (face looks reversed) Horizontal
Text appears backwards Horizontal
Image appears upside down Vertical
Create a water reflection effect Vertical
Mirror a logo for a symmetrical design Horizontal
Artistic symmetry (combine original + flipped) Either

Flip vs. Rotate — Key Difference

Flipping and rotating are often confused but do different things:

Action Result
Flip horizontal Mirror image — left side becomes right side
Flip vertical Upside-down mirror — top becomes bottom
Rotate 180° The image is turned upside down, not mirrored

A flipped image is a true mirror reflection. A rotated image is the same image turned.

For example: flip a photo of a hand pointing right → the hand now points left. Rotate 180° → the hand points left AND is upside down.

Need to rotate instead? Use the Image Rotate Tool.

Pro Tips

  • Check text before sharing — any text in a flipped image will be backwards. Always preview and read any text in the result before downloading.
  • Selfies — the "front camera mirror effect" means your selfies look different to others than they do to you in the preview. Flip horizontal to see (and share) how you actually appear.
  • Reflections — to create a natural water reflection, flip your image vertically and place the flipped copy below the original in a photo editor.
  • Before/after comparisons — use the preview to confirm the flip is what you expected before downloading.
